Safe braking and parking of VIRM intercity trains thanks to our lift and shift cylinders
NedTrain is NS’s maintenance organisation and ensures that trains are safe, clean and reliable. With dozens of service points and workshops throughout the country, NedTrain provides daily maintenance, repairs and modernisation of rolling stock. This ensures that trains remain comfortable and ready to carry more than a million passengers every day.
Challenge
Nedtrain, responsible for train maintenance and modernisation, was looking for a reliable solution to optimise the braking system of their VIRM double-decker trains, so that the trains would have extra braking power in case of an emergency, enabling them to stop in a controlled manner and park safely.
Our solution
We developed lifting and switching cylinders that optimally operate the permanent magnet brakes (PMG) of the VIRM. The lifting cylinders, located on the bogies between the wheels, move the brakes precisely onto the track, creating (after activation of the switching cylinders) a powerful magnetic field that gives the train extra braking power in an emergency. When necessary, the lifting cylinders move the PMG upwards to release the brake.
Result
Thanks to our lifting and switching cylinders, the VIRM Intercity double-decker trains can brake in a controlled and safe manner. This ensures that emergency stops run smoothly and that trains equipped with this system can be parked safely.
