Challenge
Pneumatic cylinders in the railway sector operate under high pressure and in harsh conditions. If they are deemed unfit for service or their contract term expires, replacement is often the first instinct. But a cylinder that appears worn on the outside may still be fully functional on the inside. NedTrain was looking for a partner that would look beyond the standard solution.
Our solution
Tecair recalled the existing cylinders, completely overhauled them, inspected them, and recertified them for use. Instead of producing 1,500 new cylinders, the company gave a new lease on life to 750 brake cylinders and 750 shift cylinders—components that would otherwise have been lost.
Result
The decision to refurbish has an immediate, measurable impact. With this project, Tecair is saving over 176 metric tons of CO2e—equivalent to more than 3,500 one-way flights between Amsterdam and London. NedTrain is saving on purchase costs, and the refurbished cylinders will last at least ten years longer.
